Meet the Principal

Peggy Lewis

Principal LewisWelcome to Toler Elementary, a school with a long tradition of excellence. I am proud to be the principal of such bright and engaged students. For more than 30 years I have been an educator and in my career I have taught at every grade level. I still consider myself a teacher and my philosophy is to focus on classroom learning at all levels.

Growing up in Southern California, I attended San Diego State, Chapman University and USIU. I chose a career in education because I wanted to make a difference in childrens' lives. I discovered I had a gift for reaching people. While my expertise is education, I am also a mother and I have raised children who have graduated from San Diego Unified schools. I know what it is like to sit at the table and help children with homework and school projects and to make sure they are dressed warmly and getting the most out of school.

We want parents and families to know that Toler School offers a strong curriculum that prepares students to meet rigorous academic standards. We are continuing to build on our tradition of excellence, and make it bigger and better. Our Family Academic nights allow our students and families to understand the great learning that goes on here, and to show support. Other stand-out activities that do so much for our school and students include Pennies for Peace, our PTA, our Jog-a-Thon and Book Fair Fundraisers and our Academic Chess, Tennis and Aerobic classes.

One program that really makes a difference on our campus is our character education. Our students learn not just the words of the Pillars of Character, but how to use the concepts in their daily life. For instance, if a problem occurs on the playground, we talk to the students involved about responsibility and how that trait should be used on the playground. This is just one of the many ways we are building our school community to help your children flourish.
